Which Remodelor?

Choosing A Remodelor

Selecting a contractor can have a profound effect on the outcome of any home remodeling project. Your home is most likely the single largest investment you have made. For this reason alone, it is imperative that you entrust it's repair only to a highly skilled professional. To this end we at the Rochester New York Chapter of NARI offer the following tips for those contemplating a home remodeling project.

bulletYou should choose at least two remodelers from whom you wish to solicit designs and bids. When choosing prospective contractors always consider the following:
bulletReferrals - Word of mouth is the best advertising. Ask your friends and neighbors for the names of remodelers they have used and have been happy with.
bulletLongevity - Look for remodelers with an established track record. Consider contractors who have been a presence in the community for at least a year.
bulletMembership In Professional Organizations - Review our list of NARI members. Each of these members has demonstrated professionalism and pledge to uphold the NARI code of ethics.
bulletBefore setting any appointments with the remodelers, review the following items:
bulletWhat do you plan to accomplish with this remodeling?
bulletWhat is your budget for this project? Be sure to plan for incidentals.
bulletThe initial meeting should be conducted at your home and cover the following items:
bulletHow long has the contractor been in business?
bulletWhat type of work is contemplated?
bulletHow much experience does the contractor have with this type of work?
bulletWhat are your expectations?
bulletDoes the contractor carry liability and workman's compensation insurance?
bulletReview the contractor's past work.
bulletDoes the contractor offer referrals to past clients?

A professional remodeler will be proud of his past projects and can arrange for you to see some of them. There is truth to the statement "You get what you pay for!," so the lowest bidder may not be the best choice in your particular situation. Remember, you will be working closely with the person you select, and you will live with their work day in and day out for years after the project is completed. You should select a professional remodeler who instills confidence in you with a proven ability to provide insightful solutions within budget and on time. This is why it is so important to choose a contractor who is a recognized full time professional and a member of a respected trade association such as NARI. It's you home, would you want any less for it?
